Overcome Adversity

Ruff - Overcome AdversityWhen you’re in pursuit of your dreams and it seems that you are at the top of your game, life always throws that curveball. Be in the mindset of whatever can go wrong will go wrong, but the key is to be ready and brace yourself for it.

When I put on my Dream Big t-shirt this morning, I looked in the mirror and felt unstoppable. Although things haven’t gone exactly how I’ve planned or imagined them to go, I still walk in confidence and I still have faith. Sometimes you just have to take a timeout, take another look at the bigger picture, realize how far you’ve come, and why there is no turning back even though the journey is tough. Prepare yourself to fight through it.

In the midst of adversity you will find yourself. You will figure out who you are and what you’re really made of. No matter how high the odds are stacked against you, you have to keep moving forward. When you keep believing in your dreams and work hard to achieve them, you will realize that those mountains that used to be in your way look more like speed bumps now. Understand there will be unexpected circumstances and things will go wrong, but overcoming adversity is a key to living the Dream Big Lifestyle. Don’t give up and don’t limit yourself.

Happy Dream Big Friday,

Commitment Is Key

Earlier this week I started reading “Letters to a Young Brother”,  a book written by actor Hill Harper. He wrote it to help young black males get through life and not make the same mistakes he made at a certain age. I’d definitely recommend reading this book, just as someone recommended it to me about 2 years ago. Right, 2 years ago smh. I’ve had this book 2 years and only read about 40 pages. So Monday I decided I would I start from the beginning and read the whole book by the end of the week. There’s 5 parts or chapters if you wanna call em that, so I figured I could read 1 part a day and be done on Friday.

My first commitment of 2014. You may be thinking well how hard can that be? It’s only a book, it’s only 5 days, that’s easy. Realistically I could have probably read the whole book on Monday, but it’s not about that. This is about being consistent and committing to doing something from start to finish. Too often we give up too early and it’s usually right before something great is about to happen. So how do you stay focused and committed when things get tough? Don’t focus on the obstacles. Anything worth accomplishing will almost always have obstacles, just remember why you started. In the end you’ll feel a lot more confident going into future tasks.  Besides, crossing the finish line is always a good feeling. Remember, no limitations.

What’s your motivation?

Today’s Dream Big Friday. I love Fridays… Some days I feel like I’m on top of the world. Then there’s those other days where I’m kinda like eh, in need of some sort of push, inspiration, a sign or something I don’t know… but today’s one of those days.

There’s no feeling like scrolling down my Instagram timeline and seeing someone with a Dream Big t-shirt on.  Moments like that give me the motivation to keep going, to keep striving, and never give up on my dreams.  I’d be lying to myself if I said I never thought about just giving up, failure, or disappointments. That’s reality. The best part of that reality is that I’m not a quitter, I’ll only fail if I do in fact quit, and you only get disappointed when you set expectations that aren’t met. Well I guess I don’t really mind the risk of disappointment since I expect a lot from myself and also the people around me. This gives us something to aim for, something high.

I read a quote from Greg Anderson this morning that said “When we are motivated by goals that have deep meaning, by dreams that need completion, by pure love that needs expressing, then we truly live life.” The goals I’ve set for myself are big, but I know for a fact that they aren’t impossible. As I continue to chase my dreams, I hope my story and journey inspires you to reach yours. The love and support I’ve received thus far is amazing, and I really appreciate it. I thank God everyday for the life I live.

Happy Dream Big Friday,

Q&A w/ Jasmine Love

Ruff chops it up with Jasmine Love about the current state of Hip Hop, hometown love, and “Dreaming Big”. Read the article in its entirety here.

JL: Most would say hip hop died a long time ago. As an artist, what does that mean to you and how do you view the current state of the genre?

Ruff: It means I definitely have my work cut out for me. I’ve always viewed Hip Hop as a sport, but also as a learning tool. As an artist you have to be socially aware of what’s going on around you and around the world. You have to be passionate and authentic. I think Hip Hop is in a great place right now. It’s coming back to the art form.

JL: Unlike most of today’s rap artists, your music does not contain endless lines of artificial & materialistic lifestyles. Instead, your lyrics express dream, aspiration and passion. When you are behind the mic about to record a track, what is most important to you?

Ruff: My delivery. There’s a difference between what you say and how you say it, so the most important thing to me is getting my point across and making a connection.

JL: Your music is lyric intensive, raw and relatable. It can be very easy to compare you to artists like J. Cole, Lupe Fiasco and Wale…but your bio states that you don’t feel they define you as an artist. Define Ruff, the artist.

Ruff: Ruff is a dreamer, a believer, a painter of life… As an artist, I’ve come a long way. I may share some of the same qualities as these guys, but I have my own sound. I have my own vision.
