What’s your motivation?

Today’s Dream Big Friday. I love Fridays… Some days I feel like I’m on top of the world. Then there’s those other days where I’m kinda like eh, in need of some sort of push, inspiration, a sign or something I don’t know… but today’s one of those days.

There’s no feeling like scrolling down my Instagram timeline and seeing someone with a Dream Big t-shirt on.  Moments like that give me the motivation to keep going, to keep striving, and never give up on my dreams.  I’d be lying to myself if I said I never thought about just giving up, failure, or disappointments. That’s reality. The best part of that reality is that I’m not a quitter, I’ll only fail if I do in fact quit, and you only get disappointed when you set expectations that aren’t met. Well I guess I don’t really mind the risk of disappointment since I expect a lot from myself and also the people around me. This gives us something to aim for, something high.

I read a quote from Greg Anderson this morning that said “When we are motivated by goals that have deep meaning, by dreams that need completion, by pure love that needs expressing, then we truly live life.” The goals I’ve set for myself are big, but I know for a fact that they aren’t impossible. As I continue to chase my dreams, I hope my story and journey inspires you to reach yours. The love and support I’ve received thus far is amazing, and I really appreciate it. I thank God everyday for the life I live.

Happy Dream Big Friday,

– Ruff

Q&A w/ Jasmine Love

Ruff chops it up with Jasmine Love about the current state of Hip Hop, hometown love, and “Dreaming Big”. Read the article in its entirety here.

JL: Most would say hip hop died a long time ago. As an artist, what does that mean to you and how do you view the current state of the genre?

Ruff: It means I definitely have my work cut out for me. I’ve always viewed Hip Hop as a sport, but also as a learning tool. As an artist you have to be socially aware of what’s going on around you and around the world. You have to be passionate and authentic. I think Hip Hop is in a great place right now. It’s coming back to the art form.

JL: Unlike most of today’s rap artists, your music does not contain endless lines of artificial & materialistic lifestyles. Instead, your lyrics express dream, aspiration and passion. When you are behind the mic about to record a track, what is most important to you?

Ruff: My delivery. There’s a difference between what you say and how you say it, so the most important thing to me is getting my point across and making a connection.

JL: Your music is lyric intensive, raw and relatable. It can be very easy to compare you to artists like J. Cole, Lupe Fiasco and Wale…but your bio states that you don’t feel they define you as an artist. Define Ruff, the artist.

Ruff: Ruff is a dreamer, a believer, a painter of life… As an artist, I’ve come a long way. I may share some of the same qualities as these guys, but I have my own sound. I have my own vision.
